Operations on Rational Numbers and the Algebraic Field Properties

Click any sentence to listen 👆

Performing arithmetic on rational numbers is governed by fundamental structural algebraic axioms. The set Q satisfies the properties of an algebraic field: closure, commutativity, and associativity under both addition and multiplication. The neutral element for addition is the additive identity 0, with every rational number possessing a unique additive inverse (-a/b). Similarly, the multiplicative identity is 1, and every non-zero rational number has a unique multiplicative inverse or reciprocal (b/a), noting strictly that zero possesses no reciprocal. Furthermore, the distributive property of multiplication over addition bridges these two operations, providing the primary foundation for expanding and factoring algebraic expressions. In this lesson, students master arithmetic across Q, order of operations, and properties of operations.

Station 2 Core Concepts & Lesson Explanation

1. Addition and Subtraction in Q

To add or subtract rational numbers, we obtain a common denominator (LCM of denominators):

Formula: a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc) / (bd) (where b ≠ 0, d ≠ 0).

PropertyAddition StatementMultiplication Statement
Closurea + b ∈ Qa × b ∈ Q
Commutativea + b = b + aa × b = b × a
Associative(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)(a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
Identitya + 0 = a (Additive: 0)a × 1 = a (Multiplicative: 1)
Inversea + (-a) = 0 (Opposite)a/b × (b/a) = 1 (Reciprocal, for a ≠ 0)

2. Multiplication, Division & Distributive Law

Multiplication & Division Rules :
  • Multiplication: (a/b) × (c/d) = (ac) / (bd).
  • Division: Multiply dividend by reciprocal of divisor:
    (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (ad) / (bc) (c ≠ 0).
  • Zero Rule: 0 ÷ (a/b) = 0, but (a/b) ÷ 0 is undefined.
Distributive Property (خاصية التوزيع) :

Multiplication distributes across addition:
a(b + c) = ab + ac.
Factoring out a common term facilitates rapid mental calculation:
(7/12) × 5 + (7/12) × 7 = (7/12) × (5 + 7) = (7/12) × 12 = 7.

3. Order of Operations (PEMDAS / BODMAS)

  1. Parentheses / Brackets: Evaluate expressions within innermost parentheses first.
  2. Exponents & Radicals: Compute powers and root extractions.
  3. Multiplication & Division: Perform in sequential order from left to right.
  4. Addition & Subtraction: Perform in sequential order from left to right.

Arithmetic & Field Operations Lab
Activity 1: Distributive Property Computation

Evaluate using the distributive property without direct calculator use: (5 / 13) × 8 + (5 / 13) × 6 - (5 / 13).

Model Answer: Factor out the common rational factor (5/13):
(5/13) × [ 8 + 6 - 1 ] = (5/13) × [ 13 ] = 5.
Activity 2: Multi-Step Order of Operations

Calculate: 18 - 2 × (3 + 1)2 ÷ 4.

Model Answer: Parentheses: 3 + 1 = 4. Exponent: 42 = 16. Multiplication/Division left to right: 2 × 16 = 32, then 32 ÷ 4 = 8. Subtraction: 18 - 8 = 10.
