Array Architects: Discovering Patterns, Rows, Columns & Repeated Addition 🧱✖️

Welcome, young mathematicians, to the fascinating universe of patterns and spatial arrangements! Have you ever looked closely at an egg carton or noticed how ceramic tiles are laid out across a floor? They are organized in perfect, straight horizontal and vertical lines without any empty gaps or overlapping items. In mathematics, this structured visual arrangement is called an «Array»! An array consists of horizontal lines called «rows» and vertical lines called «columns». Rather than counting items one by one, arrays unlock the secret relationship between repeated addition and multiplication. For example, if an array has 3 rows with 4 bright stars in each row, we can calculate the total by adding 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, or express it concisely as a multiplication sentence: 3 × 4 = 12 stars. Join us in this interactive station as we build arrays, explore number patterns, and master multiplication sentences!

🧱 1. Understanding Mathematical Arrays

An Array is an orderly arrangement of objects, shapes, or numbers in equal horizontal rows and equal vertical columns, with no gaps and no overlapping items.

✅ Valid Array
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
3 equal rows and 4 equal columns (3 × 4 = 12 stars)
❌ Not an Array
⭐ ⭐ ⭐
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
⭐ ⭐
Unequal rows with gaps and missing items
🔄 2. From Repeated Addition to Multiplication
Row Addition Strategy:

Add the number of items in each row:

4 + 4 + 4 = 12
3 groups of 4 items
Column Addition Strategy:

Add the number of items in each column:

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12
4 groups of 3 items
Multiplication Equation: (Number of Rows) × (Number of Columns) = 3 × 4 = 12
🛠️ Interactive Guided Practice Workshop:
Practice 1

An array has 4 rows with 5 apples in each row. Write the repeated addition and multiplication sentence.

Model Solution: Repeated addition: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 apples. Multiplication sentence: 4 × 5 = 20 apples.

Practice 2

Convert this repeated addition into a multiplication expression: 6 + 6 + 6 = 18.

Model Solution: The number 6 is added 3 times, so the multiplication sentence is: 3 × 6 = 18.

Practice 3

How many total items are in an array with 2 rows and 7 columns?

Model Solution: Total items = 2 × 7 = 14 items.

Practice 4

Why is a group of 3 circles above 5 circles NOT considered an array?

Model Solution: Because the rows are not equal in size and do not form aligned columns.

Practice 5

What is the column addition sentence for an array of 2 rows and 4 columns?

Model Solution: Each column contains 2 items: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8.

Practice 6

Complete the number pattern and state its rule: 4, 8, 12, 16, ...

Model Solution: The next number is 20, and the rule is to add 4 (+4), which represents multiples of 4.

Practice 7

A baker puts cookies in 3 trays with 6 cookies per tray. What is the total number of cookies?

Model Solution: Total cookies = 3 × 6 = 18 cookies.

Practice 8

If the product of two factors is 24 and one factor is 4, what is the other factor?

Model Solution: 4 × 6 = 24, so the missing factor is 6.
