The Compensation Strategy: Rounding to Friendly Numbers
Mental math strategies empower students to calculate multi-digit sums and differences in their head with blazing speed. The first powerful technique is the Compensation Strategy. When an addend is very close to a friendly number ending in zero (such as 19, 29, 98, or 199), we adjust the number to make it friendly, perform the calculation, and then compensate (adjust back): For example, to add 45 + 29: Add 1 to 29 to make it 30 (a friendly ten). Now compute 45 + 30 = 75. Since we added 1 extra at the beginning, we must subtract 1 from the final sum: 75 - 1 = 74. For subtraction, such as 83 - 39: Add 1 to 39 to make it 40 ➔ 83 - 40 = 43. Because we subtracted 1 too much, we compensate by adding 1 back: 43 + 1 = 44.
سؤال ذكاء للفهم
سؤال: How does the compensation strategy work in addition?
إجابة استرشادية: Add a small amount to make a number friendly (ending in zero), compute the sum, and then subtract that same amount to compensate.
The Break Apart and Add/Subtract Strategy (Place Value Decomposition)
The second essential technique is the Break Apart Strategy (Decomposition). In this strategy, we decompose numbers into their expanded place values (tens and ones, or hundreds, tens, and ones) and compute each place separately: To calculate 54 + 38: Break apart 54 into (50 + 4) and 38 into (30 + 8). First, add the tens: 50 + 30 = 80. Second, add the ones: 4 + 8 = 12. Finally, combine the totals: 80 + 12 = 92. For subtraction, such as 76 - 42: Break apart 42 into 40 and 2. Subtract the tens first: 76 - 40 = 36. Then subtract the ones: 36 - 2 = 34. This eliminates cognitive overload.
سؤال ذكاء للفهم
سؤال: What are the steps for the Break Apart strategy in addition?
إجابة استرشادية: Decompose both numbers into tens and ones, add the tens together, add the ones together, and combine the two results.
The Empty Number Line Jump Strategy: Counting On and Back
The third visual technique is the Empty Number Line (Jump Strategy). Instead of drawing every individual tick mark, we draw an open number line and make large, efficient jumps: To add 46 + 35: Start at 46. Make a big jump of +30 (the tens) to reach 76. Then make a jump of +4 to reach the friendly number 80, and a final jump of +1 (from the remaining ones in 5) to land on 81. For subtraction, we can jump backwards from the minuend, or count up from the subtrahend to the minuend to find the difference between them.

سؤال: How do you jump on an empty number line for 46 + 35?
إجابة استرشادية: Start at 46, jump +30 to 76, jump +4 to reach 80, and jump +1 to land on 81.

Compensation in Subtraction Rule (Watch the Sign!)

When subtracting with compensation:

  • Problem: 74 - 29
  • Step 1: Round 29 to 30 (+1).
  • Step 2: Subtract friendly 30 ➔ 74 - 30 = 44.
  • Step 3: ADD back 1 because you subtracted 1 too much! ➔ 44 + 1 = 45.
Break Apart Subtraction Protocol

• To subtract 68 - 35:
• Keep the first number whole (68).
• Break the second number into 30 and 5.
• Subtract tens: 68 - 30 = 38.
• Subtract ones: 38 - 5 = 33.

Why do we ADD back in subtraction compensation? Master the logic once and for all!

The Over-Subtraction Rule
When solving 65 - 19, if you subtract 20 instead of 19, you took away 1 item too many! To be fair, you must return (ADD) that 1 item back to the result.
تطبيق عملي: 65 - 20 = 45 ➔ 45 + 1 = 46.
Break Apart Keeps Minuend Whole
In subtraction, do NOT break apart the first number! Keep the first number whole, and break apart only the second number (subtrahend).
تطبيق عملي: 87 - 34 = (87 - 30) - 4 = 57 - 4 = 53.
