Singular & Plural: Building Strong Sentences! 📚✏️
Welcome to our sentence-building workshop! Today, we master the fundamental secrets of English grammar that help us speak and write like fluent champions. In English, when we speak about one single item or person, we use singular words. When we speak about two, three, or many items, we transform them into plurals. Most words simply take an «-s» at the end, like one friend becoming two friends, or one book becoming three books. However, words ending in hissing sounds like -ch, -sh, -s, -ss, -x, and -o need «-es», like watch becoming watches! We also pair singular nouns with «This is» and plural nouns with «These are». Let us discover these rules together!
📚 Regular Plurals: Adding -s and -es
For most nouns, we simply add -s:
- friend ➔ friends
- cousin ➔ cousins
- sister ➔ sisters
- book ➔ books
Nouns ending in -ch, -sh, -s, -ss, -x add -es:
- watch ➔ watches (ساعات يد)
- sandwich ➔ sandwiches (شطائر)
- bus ➔ buses (حافلات)
- box ➔ boxes (صناديق)
- glass ➔ glasses (أكواب / نظارات)
🧱 Demonstratives in Full Sentences
1. Singular Structure:
This is + my / a + singular noun
- «This is my brother, Omar.»
- «This is a blue watch.»
2. Plural Structure:
These are + my + plural noun
- «These are my brothers.»
- «These are my new watches.»
3. Capitalization & Punctuation:
Every sentence starts with a CAPITAL letter and ends with a full stop (.).
