Geometry is all around us in the buildings we admire, the toys we play with, and the shapes we draw every day! In this visual and hands-on lesson, second graders explore the wonderful world of two-dimensional flat shapes and three-dimensional solid shapes. Flat 2D shapes, such as triangles with 3 sides and 3 vertices, squares with 4 equal sides, rectangles, trapezoids, and circles, have straight sides and sharp corners called vertices—except the circle, which has zero sides and vertices. Next, students step into the world of 3D solids that occupy space in real life: cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres. We count their faces, edges, and vertices with confidence. Finally, we explore visual and number patterns, identifying repeating units to predict future terms with brilliant mathematical logic.

📐 Two-Dimensional (2D) Flat Shapes

🔺
Triangle

3 straight sides
3 vertices

🟩
Square

4 equal sides
4 vertices

▭
Rectangle

Opposite sides equal
4 vertices

⚪
Circle

Closed curved line
0 sides, 0 vertices

🧊 Three-Dimensional (3D) Solid Shapes
Solid Shape Number of Flat Faces Number of Straight Edges Number of Vertices
Cube 🎲 6 identical square faces 12 edges 8 vertices
Rectangular Prism 📦 6 rectangular faces 12 edges 8 vertices
Cylinder 🥫 2 circular bases 0 straight edges 0 vertices
Cone 🍦 1 circular base 0 straight edges 1 sharp vertex
Sphere ⚽ 0 flat faces 0 edges 0 vertices
🔁 Pattern Investigation:

Shape Pattern: 🟡 🔺 🟡 🔺 🟡 🔺 ← Pattern unit is (Circle then Triangle).

Number Pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ← Rule is adding 5 (+5) at each step.
