Comparing & Ordering: Greater Than, Less Than, Equal To & Number Line ⚖️🔢
Welcome back, young mathematicians! Today, we learn how to balance and compare numbers just like a super-accurate balance scale. Imagine a friendly, hungry alligator living in the river of numbers: its wide mouth always opens toward the larger group of fish to eat the greatest amount! That open mouth is the greater than symbol (>). If its pointy tail points toward the smaller amount, that is less than (<). And when both sides have the exact same amount, we place the equal sign (=). We will also travel along the awesome number line from 0 to 10: moving to the right makes numbers grow larger in ascending order, while moving to the left makes them smaller in descending order. Let us compare and order like champions!
🐊 Greater Than (>)
The open mouth points to the greater number:
8 is greater than 5
🐟 Less Than (<)
The small point points to the smaller number:
4 is less than 7
⚖️ Equal To (=)
Used when both quantities are exactly the same:
6 is equal to 6
📏 The Number Line from 0 to 10
A straight line beginning at 0 on the left and progressing rightward to 10:
