Shapes & Patterns: Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle & Pattern Rules 🔺🟦🟡
Welcome, creative junior architects! Today, we open our eyes to the geometric shapes that make up everything in our wonderful world. When we gaze at a round wall clock or a gleaming coin, we see a smooth curved shape called a circle (it has 0 straight sides and 0 corners). When we look at a ceramic floor tile or a game die, we see a square with 4 equal straight sides and 4 sharp corners. When we enjoy a delicious slice of pizza or look at a pyramid, we see a triangle with 3 sides and 3 corners. And our classroom door and book covers are rectangles, with 4 straight sides where opposite sides are equal. We will also discover visual repeating patterns, identifying the core pattern rule and predicting what shape comes next with lightning speed!
Circle
A continuous curved closed line:
- • Straight Sides: 0 (none)
- • Corners (Vertices): 0 (none)
- • Real Examples: Wall clock ⏰, coin 🪙
Square
A balanced symmetrical 2D shape:
- • Straight Sides: 4 equal sides
- • Corners: 4 corners
- • Real Examples: Floor tile, cube face 🎲
Triangle
A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners:
- • Straight Sides: 3 sides
- • Corners: 3 corners
- • Real Examples: Pizza slice 🍕, pyramid ⛺
Rectangle
A shape with 4 sides (opposite sides equal):
- • Straight Sides: 4 sides (2 long, 2 short)
- • Corners: 4 corners
- • Real Examples: Door 🚪, tablet screen 📱
